The scarb beetle is an important part of Egyptian religious and
ceremonial rites. It rolls balls of animal dung along the
ground, symbolic of the Sun's circuit and daily self-renewal
as well as resurrection. Used as amulets, scarabs were often
hung around the necks of babies and small children in an effort
to combat the high mortality rate among the young.
