Egyptian craftsmen used enormous amounts of gold for many purposes
but the most widespread use was in jewelry making. Gold jewelry was
made for the living and the dead, pieces made especially to adorn the
mummified corpse. Funerary texts prescribed the use of gold for
this purpose.
Red is the color of blood with all its connotations of energy, dynamism,
power and even life itself. But red is also the color of the evil-tempered
desert-God Set, patron of disorder, storms and aridity. Carnelian as
used in this piece, also meant "sadness". $95
